Wheeler Historic Farm

So, I have been trying to be adventurous. A good self assessment of myself is social, but shy. Ya, I know it makes no sense whatsoever. I love being with people, but I feel like a complete idiot at the same time. So, this whole move and meet new people thing has been a fun adventure for me and I'm trying to get to know as many people as I can. Let's face it, my husband is in med school, and I'm a lonely wife. ;)
I had a night in September where I invited all the first year medical student wives over to my apartment so we could get to know each other better and hopefully start making some friends. I think it turned out pretty awesome myself, and that was super brave of me. Thanks to Shelly who is a lonely 4th year medical student wife and my sister that gave me the idea and the confidence to do that!
From this get together we have been able to start doing some play dates for our kids. It has been so good for Kael to play with other kids, and that makes me so happy!
So, here are some pictures of our play date to Wheeler Historic Farm up here in SLC.

Eden refused to look at the camera.

Eden has to put up with so much sometimes and she is so good. So here she is putting up with me walking around the stinky smells and chasing Kael. So she showed us and stuck her tongue out at us.

Kael and the big lazy pig.

The goats were crazy. They just jumped right up at the fence and Kael would reach out and pet them. I was a little nervous they would bite him, but we made it without any injuries.

This goat was just out walking around and the kids got to pet him.
The little boy in the picture is one of our friends and his name just happens to be Derek.
We sure had a great time! Thanks to those who came with us!

Day 3

Growing up I watched a lot of television. Ever since I married Derek we've always had cable, but have only watched it for General Conference for the most part. However, we do like to watch a series here and there when time permits, so we download it or buy it.
So, as of right now the only tv show I can think of off the top of my head is
PSYCH
As a little girl I liked Sesame Street, Rainbow Bright, Gummy Bears, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Barney (YES it's true I was a dork for a short time), Full House, and all the TGIF shows.
That's as good as I got...

30 Days

So, I've seen this on a few blogs, and decided that I want to do this. Over the next 30 days I'm going to answer these questions. Because I print out this blog I think it will be fun for my kids to see a little bit about me back in my spritely, youthful days of motherhood.
DAY ONE: Favorites are hard for me. I usually just go with whatever everyone else wants to do because I'm not picky. However, I am going to do my best to come up with something each day. For a favorite song, I would love to say that I like dancing in secret to the song Low. Not the best song I know, but it is fun. ;) However my favorite song to sing at Derek is "Have I told you lately that I love you?" really loud and abnoxious.
day 1- your favorite song
day 2- your favorie movies
day 3-your favorite television program
day 4- your favorite book
day 5- your favorite quote
day 6- 20 of your favorite thigns
day 7- a photo that makes you happy

Winter

Ok so winter is around the corner. I know it is only just fall, but I am a little nervous to live in snow with 2 kids. So, what do I do? I start preparing.

This hat was not that hard to make, but it was my first time trying it so it does have a few errors, but you can hardly tell. It was suppose to be for Eden, but it fit Kael's head, so I gave it to a little girl who plays with Kael and is super sweet. She loved it and it was so cute. She put it on and wouldn't take it off. Mind you it was a really hot day still. ;)

So, I am going to start crocheting again. Wish me luck. I want to make about 3 hats per kid. Now I just need to find some super cute yarn. I have patterns for boys brim hats, and ear flap hats, and I think they are going to turn out adorable. I'll keep you updated how they go.

As for other winter stuff, Kael has a snow suit already, and Eden has coats. I still need a winter coat for Kael, snow boots, gloves, and a full body snow suit for Eden. We have excellent sledding hills right outside, and I'm certain they will be well used this winter. If anyone knows where I can get this stuff for SUPER cheap, I'd be a happy Mom.

Thanks to Cate!

How do I even pick from so many amazing photos for my walls? I guess I'll take them all. There were more wonderful photos taken still that I didn't even post. Thank you Cate for the fun photos and memories of my kids. Check her out here: http://www.ciaobellaphotography.blogspot.com/
I'm in love with my kids. They are amazing. Now if I can just get them over being sick, I think life would be pretty perfect.

In LOVE with her!

In LOVE with him!

The cuteness of Kael

So tonight at dinner Kael was sitting at the table stuffing his face as normal. He then proceeded to fold his arms and say dobadabadobadoo. So, in his own little language, Kael prayed for the first time. He did it about 5 times and I have to say I'm a proud Mom. Months and months have passed where we have tried to get him to just fold his arms to pray, and tonight he did it on his own, and said his own little prayer. He now folds his arms for about 5 seconds every night to pray and a couple times he has kept them folded the whole time.

Also, just the other day I told Kael it was time to come inside after playing on the playground, and for the first time EVER the sweet boy came right behind me and WALKED into the house, and never once cried or threw a tantrum. He has now done this twice. This is a major improvement from the screaming and kicking trantrums to get him to come inside.

I'm so proud of this stinkin cute boy! He amazes me every day.

Eden at 6 months:

Half way to a year… I cannot believe my baby is 6 months. I was all gung ho to write the post about her on the day of, but life happens I guess. Is it possible that this girl can get any cuter, sweeter, and more loveable every single day?

Eden can officially sit up. This is just within the last week or so. She still wobbles though. She loves putting anything in her mouth especially toys, fingers (her thumb), her toes, Mom’s fingers, etc. She is also just scooting backwards now, and rolling over like crazy. She took a break for a while from rolling over, but now she never stays on her blanket for very long. She loves her walker and will spin the toy on it over and over. She smiles at Kael all the time and puts up with him sitting on her to hug her. They are pals already. He has even tried to kiss her cheek once, and I about died in the cuteness. She is still opinionated about smiling and who she likes, and you really have to win her over to get her to giggle, but when she does smile it is to die for because it is in her beautiful big eyes and lights up her whole face. She loves to coo and babble now. She even likes to swing just a little on the play ground, but the swings are still a little big for her.

She got her shots on Monday and they were nasty. I felt so bad for the girl. She handled it so well and smiled after, but then she got a fever of 102 and threw up in the middle of the night all over the front of me. Ya. Not fun. I felt so bad for her though that it wasn’t a big deal. She hadn’t reacted like this for her last 2 sets of shots, but she did get more this time including the flu shot.

As for stats, my doctors office doesn’t give me them, but just tells me so I have to go from memory! Argh…

Height: 25 inches
Weight: 15.3 lbs

I can’t remember anything else and they didn’t give me any percentages. Oh well. She is getting bigger and that is all that matters.

As for eating, I started Eden on rice cereal at about 5 months. It was about the time she started not sleeping so well at night. She is not a big fan of the food... She also has tried sweet potatos and apple sauce. Eden has not liked solid foods very much at all. At first she would gag a lot like she just didn't like the texture. So, I mixed the sweet potatos with the cereal and she seemed to like that for a couple days. Then, I tried apple sauce thinking she would love it, and she gagged the most on this. She does not like applesauce at all... This is so weird to me because even though it took Kael 2 months to get good at eating solids he LOVED all of the food he tried, with the exception of green beans. He always tried to eat his cereal, and loved it. I don't know what to do to get her to like solids better. She seems to like sweet potatos ok, so I guess I will stick with mixing the sweet potatos and the rice cereal for now. And no more applesauce. Yuck.

Have I mentioned yet that I LOVE her chunky thighs? I like to call them thunder thighs, and they are adorable! Her beautiful little thighs are a good place to end.

Just know Eden that Mom and Dad and Kael love you so very much! We are grateful you are in our family. You complete us and we love your sweet little personality!
Love you little lady bug!

We got pictures taken of both Kael and Eden and they will be posted soon.

#200

I can't believe I made it to 200 posts. I am really hoping to get this blog printed off one day, and now I can just imagine the amount it is going to cost with 200 posts... Maybe I should have started sooner?... Maybe I should ask Derek to print it out for my Christmas gift every Christmas? A lot of maybes...
It amazes me how quickly time goes by sometimes, and how it seems to stand still at others. I wonder how that works because in the end it really passes in the same amount of time. Off the subject.

It has been one of the longest months of my life. I knew becoming a medical student's wife that this was going to be tough. So, to mentally prepare I prepared for the worst. I mean come on that should only make life seem better if you are ready for the worst right?

Somehow that didn't quite happen.

Derek started medical school. My children get sick. I get tired. Derek gets tired. Derek studies all day long. Derek is gone all day long. Life seems long. Sleepless nights. Are we to 4th year yet? NO! Hmmm. Children still sick. Take kids to doctor. Still tired. More sleepless nights. Children finally getting over being sick. Take kids to doctor. Still tired. Derek still studies all the time. Derek is still gone all day long. Hmmm.

Somehow that first month seemed so long yet it is over so quickly. Oh and I'm still tired.

Kael was the first to get sick and it still hasn't completely gone away. Eden then got sick and hers turned into croop. That is yucky stuff let me tell you. This was the first time I have taken my kids to the doctor for being sick, that is how worried I was. Then, the kids have slowly been getting better. I took Kael to his 2 yr. check up. He needed shots. Not a big deal. He actually did pretty well. Then, a couple days later he has a reaction to one of the shots. There was a huge red rash the size of a half dollar, a hard lump, and it was warm. I wasn't too worried, and just wanted to know if I should put heat or cool on it. I called the doctor and of course they wanted to see him, and of course it turned out to not be a big deal.

Let's just say I'm done with the doctor for a while. Oh wait. Eden has her 6 month check in 2 weeks and they want to see Kael again in December. (Enter sarcasm here)

Kael's weight is low and they want to recheck that. Personally it is probably because he was sick for a month before he went in. They also want to check his speech. He is delayed there. I have known he is delayed and I'm not really worried.

I'm not trying to complain, well maybe a little, this is my blog, but I do know that I have been very blessed in this last month as well.

Blessings:
I have an amazing family who love me. Derek has been so supportive even with all the studying he is doing. Kael and Eden try to be happy when they are sick and are so sweet. My parents answer my frantic calls at midnight wondering if my child will live till morning. And my other random calls the last month of asking why this is so hard!? I have the best job working from home where my brother lets me take time off any time I need. All of my family who let me call anytime to just talk about surviving. Awesome neighbors who have been so supportive and willing to keep an eye on my kids or just watch Eden at a moments notice. I'm so glad we live where we do. We were so blessed to end up where we are. Heavenly Father knew this is where we need to be and I am so grateful for it.

To everyone who has helped me survive this last month THANK YOU!
Now to a gazillion more months like this and for being stronger for making it through this one.

Oh and a picture of Kael being cute.

PS: Stay tuned for Kael's 2 year photos and Eden's 6 month photos. They are going to be so cute! They should be posted in about 2 weeks.

Locked In. Panick. Long Day.

So in July I believe I wrote a post about locking myself and Kael out of the house for about 30 minutes and had to have campus security come and let us in, and the whole while Eden was screaming inside. Yes. I locked myself out of my house.

Today, I am writing about getting locked IN. I decided yesterday around 4ish that my carpets were in desperate need of being vacumed. So, I went to grab the vacuum out of the front closet and when I opened the door it was trapped with fallen tubs. We no longer have a garage, so all of our storage tubs are shoved in all of our closets. The tubs were all out of disarray and I just couldn't stand for that when I couldn't get to my vacuum, so a huge project came under way.

I began taking out all the tubs and rearranging, and was rather pleased with myself. I only had a few more things to arrange when Kael decided he needed to come close himself in the closet like he does quite often. There is no light switch in the closet and Kael likes to hide in the dark. I finished my organizing and went to open the door and to my astonishment it wouldn't turn at all! There isn't a lock on this door, so I couldn't understand why it wouldn't open.

First thought ok maybe I'm just stupid and can't open a door.

Second thought, I'M STUCK, I'M STUCK I'M REALLY STUCK! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'M TRAPPED IN A CLOSET WITH KAEL!!! Ya. That was me panicking.

Third thought. Derek is at school and won't be home for at least an hour... Eden is in her crib suppose to wake up starving about hmmm NOW, and at least Kael is having a good time, and my phone is a foot away on my computer desk... Why isn't that in my pocket?....

Fourth thought. I need to get out of here.

Fifth thought. Stomp up and down and maybe the people in the apartment below will be mad and come up to see what's up. Dumb idea, but I'm going to try it.

Stomp Stomp Stomp...

Sixth thought. I'm panicking. Yes. Scream for help! Maybe someone will come in the stairwell and hear me.

HELP HELP HELP. (Yes, I can admit it I screamed like a baby for a second.)

Seventh thought. It's really dark, feels like walls are actually closing in for the first time in my life.

Eighth thought. I need a miracle.

Tried opening the door again. Nope. Didn't open.

Nineth thought. Miracles don't usually open doors. I need to be smart and stop being stupid. Look around and see what's in here.

At this point, found a tool box. Started feeling in dark for a screw driver. Found one. Found attachment to screw driver. Found screws in door. Slowly took door knob off of door. Door opened.

Tenth thought. Miracles do happen. Thank you Heavenly Father for this little miracle.

So, glad there was a tool box in there, and I wasn't stuck in a closet with a sick Kael for more than 15 minutes.

Kael had so much fun and really loved trying to help me get the door knob off. So, much in fact that he ran to Eden's room and locked the door. Yes. 5 minutes after Kael and I were locked in a closet Kael locked himself in Eden's room. Glad I had that screw driver again...

On a side note, Kael and Eden have both been sick and it has been a couple long nights and days. Today doesn't seem to be starting off that great either. Another miracle would be nice... :)

Catch Up

I have a few posts to catch up on. August has been a busy month for us. Kael's birthday, Uncle Steve visiting us, Derek's school starting, and what this post is about Aunt Shelly visiting us coming all the way from Tennessee. Yes, Shell is crazy, but if she wasn't I wouldn't have seen her this August. Thanks for a fun visit.
Shell came with her two boys and left Miss Megan home with her Dad. We first all got together at Jerris' house for pizza and fun. It was a great chance for the kids to play and a little wii action as well.
The next we took the kids to the zoo. I of course didn't bring my camera again... However there really are only so many zoo pictures needed I think. I have been LOVING my year pass. I've probably almost paid it off by how often we've gone.
That night Shell took Jill and I to dinner to celebrate Jill's birthday. It was a lot of fun, and just us girls, and Eden too of course.
Thanks for a fun visit Shell. Here are the few pictures I got of the visit, and they were all at Jerris' house.

Cousins playing.

Adults playing too.

Derek and Eden

Elizabeth

More playing.

Uncle Steve

Before school started Derek's mission buddy Steve Marten came to visit us from Nebraska. It was a really fun week. Mostly we just goofed around and ate good food, however we did show Steve what we do with 2 kids. We went to the Zoo, The Living Planet Aquarium, and the park to name a few of the activities we did. Unfortuantely I didn't get very many pictures while he was here and I wish I had more. Here is what I got though. Thanks for visiting us Steve we miss you already.

Discovery Gateway

I wanted to venture out of the house today, but Derek was studying all day... I decided I just needed to bite the bullet and go out by myself with 2 kids or I never would. I am getting braver. :) We went to Discovery Gateway back in May with Derek's family and Kael LOVED it. I wanted to take the kids again to see if it would be worth a season pass for somewhere to go in the winter.
Here is my pros and cons list from what I learned today:
Pros:
Kael LOVES this place.
Different toys for kids to play with.
Inside activity for during the long winter months where it actually snows here.
Kael LOVES this place.
Cons:
GERM FEST!
I lost Kael 4 times... I looked down for 2 seconds and he darts away. (SCAREY)
Very hard with Eden. - I really could use another arm or two.
GERM FEST!
I figure my kids are going to be sick ALL winter no matter what because all of the vents in our apartment complex are all connected so everyone here says plan on them being sick, so hey lets just spread the germs.
Anyone in the Salt Lake area wanna buy a season pass together and go with me? I could use a buddy. If I buy a pass by myself I need to go 5 times in the next year to pay it off with regular admission, so I should go at least once a month to make it worth it.
Did I mention Kael LOVES this place? ;)
Kael's first love... Balls... He would have stayed in this area all day if I let him. I wanted him to explore everything though and it was worth it.
Kael wanted to sit on this stupid horse. Not an easy task with Eden in a front carrier and the horse being like 20 feet tall... Kael LOVED this awesome Life Flight Helicopter they had available for kids to explore. He stood in it forever patiently waiting for kids to move so he could sit down. When he finally got a chance to sit down a great big man came and sat on him trying to take his place. The poor kid got scared and cried. I know I would have. But, he faced his fears because the helicopter was too cool to pass up a chance to explore. Makes me miss you so much Mom. Good times.
This is what Eden thought of being dragged around all day just so Kael could have fun. ;)

Derek's White Coat Ceremony

Pictures at bottom of post if you don't want to read.

Now that the trauma of this experience has worn off I think I'm able to write about it. I don't want to forget this experience, mainly just so that I can look back and remember (remember what? hmm...) I don't know if I really want to remember, but oh well.
To begin I need to say that I have been excited for this. Derek has worked so so hard to get into medical school, and this is one experience I really wanted to see. For those who don't know what the white coat ceremony is, this is where all the new medical students get to receive their white coat to wear for medical school, take the hipocratic oath, and they get basically initiated into medical school. It is a formal occasion, so I got to get dressed up a bit, exciting again.
As excited as I was for this, it really isn't that big of a deal. But, yes, I was excited.

The reason I was so excited was because Derek worked so hard so far to get to this point and it was exciting to see the beginning. I have been his biggest cheerleader through this process and so I feel a little bit of accomplishment myself. Selfish, yes a little. ;) However, I really just wanted to be there to support Derek. To be able to tell Kael and Eden someday they got to be there, and I could tell them about how hard their dad worked to become a doctor.
Now, the story.

We have known about this date since May and invited several people. As the months went on the numbers trickled down to who would be able to make it. I knew I was going to need help with 2 little children. I knew that Kael wouldn't last 1 1/2 hours sitting still and quiet, and knew I would have to walk with him in the halls for basically the entire program. I was prepared. My brother Josh and Derek's mom turned out to be the only 2 who could make it. The day of the ceremony came and we decided it was a big hassle and didn't want to make Josh drive all the way out here. I would have enough help with the kids with Derek's mom being there. Well, less than an hour before we had to leave Derek's mom got sick and wasn't able to come.
I was a little devastated. No HELP. I REALLY didn't want to just stay home. I was already all dressed up, and got the kids in their cute little outfits. Months of anticipation to be canceled an hour before it began. So, I did what any crazy person would do. I got the kids packed up and told Derek I wanted to come and if I had to leave early , then I had to leave early. I was prepared to chase Kael in the hall with Eden in a carrier, I was prepared for crying, I had doodle boards, snacks, juice, change of outfits, I was prepared. I was prepared to leave early as well. I just wanted to see Derek walk in that room and stand up with his class. I wanted to take maybe ONE picture of him in his white coat.

Derek had to be there 30 min early and parking was really far away and I couldn't walk with both kids, so we decided to take the bus. Kael LOVED the bus! It was so exciting for him. He liked how it was so bouncy, and it was a fun new experience for him.

When we arrived Derek went to get in line and Eden of course needed her diaper changed. I was prepared, so I was able to handle this. After she was all cleaned up I put her in the carrier and had a lion leesh backpack for Kael so he could still run around before it started. We went and found seats. I chose the very back by a friend Raquel. Her husband is in Derek's class and they have a little boy who is about 15 months old, so this was perfect. They were so sweet and let Kael borrow toys and helped us out.

The chairs were just rediculous. They were like movie theatre seats that fold up. Poor Kael was just too little and didn't weigh enough to keep the seat down. I had Eden in the front carrier so I couldn't hold Kael on my lap. He kept getting smooshed by the seat, or his feet caught. Every time it made him cry. A man brought in a big booster cushion for the seat, and that really didn't help either because Kael was too wiggly and it kept smooshing him too. So, we were in the hall waiting for the ceremony to start and Kael really liked the up and down arrows on an elevator. It was really cute actually.

The ceremony was about to start and I knew Kael was still really wiggly, but I wanted to see Derek walk in, so I rushed Kael back in and sat him on the big smooshy seat. He had already drank all of his juice at this point. Eden had her pacifier in her mouth because every time I had to pick up Kael she would get smooshed herself and start crying.

Right before the medical students were to walk in line poor Kael's leg got smooshed in the seat. I tried to get it out and Eden got smooshed by Kael and so she started crying. So now both kids are crying and smooshed and not happy. Then students start walking in and I'm trying to look for Derek and stop both kids from crying because it is fairly quiet at this point.

At this point a rather RUDE lady came up and grabbed me on the arm and said, "You need to leave now. They want it quiet while the student's walk in." So, I'm super embarrassed already because of my crying children, and now this lady of all things. So I try to pick up kael with eden, and the lady wouldn't let go of my arm and she starts pulling on me. I couldn't even grab my diaper bag or anything and as she is twisting my of course Eden's pacifier goes flying out of her mouth and bounces to who knows where. I hurry out as fast as I could mortified.

Kael noticed the elevator arrows and started to calm down. I couldn't see Derek walk in even though he was one of the first in. I missed it. I got the kids calm somewhat and had to look away from the ushers. If I would have looked at them I probably wouldn't have been able to control my emotions. I just stood there while Kael pointed at the arrows. The lady who grabbed my arm was now gone. There was one lady still at the door. I didnt' know what to do. My bag and Eden's pacifier were still in the room. I didn't even know if I was ALLOWED back in. At this point I wanted to just disappear magically.
Soon, Kael decided to throw another tantrum when I wouldn't let him go down the stairs. This set Eden off and again my children were crying. All of my preparedness was in the room holding the ceremony. I do have to say they had awesome television setup showing the ceremony in the hall, but it didn't matter anymore. I was already kicked out. I just wanted to go home. I was planning on watching the ceremony from those TV's in the first place. Like I said, I just wanted to see him walk in.

This usher lady was kind and asked if she could hold my baby. I just asked if she could grab my bag and I would leave. She did this. However, it doesn't change the fact that I lost my favorite pacifier!!!! That made me just as upset as everything else probably. ;)

Kael really liked the bus ride home. I was glad to be gone. I called my sister Shannon and just bawled when I got home. It took her a while to understand what I was saying. I was trying to laugh at the same time as bawling.

I'm just glad it is over.
I grabbed these few photos from Raquel's facebook. Thanks Raquel, I'm glad I got a few pictures with Derek even if I couldn't be there.

Derek's name is on the bottom of the list.

Derek is the first student to go to the University of Utah Medical School who graduated from Dixie State College. This is a picture with him with all the student's who came from Southern Utah University. They should be doing an article on him in the spectrum down in St. George.

Derek's medical school class (University of Utah Medical School class of 2014). I should have made the picture bigger. He is on the bottom row on the left. There are 82 medical students in his class. At the white coat ceremony each student was given a really nice stethescope from the alumni of the school.

As Big As A Cow's...

So a little boy that's 5 years old on the play ground made a comment to me today. I had Eden in the front carrier so she could look around at everything while I chased Kael.
The comment: Her eyes are as big as a COW'S. My repsonse. Yes, probably, and I love them!

The little boy then went on to tell me about a movie called "Bedtime Stories". If you haven't heard about it, it really is quite funny and has Adam Sandler in it. Well, the boy was telling me about a guinea pig named "Bugsey" that his eyes bugged out of it's head. So, I said, yes I remember that. Then he replied... "Her eyes are bigger than BUGSEY'S! Ya... Couldn't help, but laugh that time. So without further ado, my little girl's eyes that are as big as a cow's and bigger than Bugsey's. Aren't they the most beautiful big blue eyes you have ever seen though?

Her magna facial expression.

5 months

Watch out world she is growing up! Eden at 5 months. Love this little girl. She brings so much joy into our home! Kael has really loved giving her hugs lately and every time I try to take a picture he thinks he needs to pose for the camera instead of hug his sister so I haven't caught that sweet moment on my camera yet...
I have lots to post about, but for now just enjoy this sweet 5 month old girl!
Love you Eden!

PROUD OF HIM!

This last little while has been quite stressful. I won't go into details, but we finally have some relief in our lives...
Derek has been dieting since November 2009 trying to make weight for the airforce. This morning at 5:30 he went in for his physical and to see if he would make weight. I won't post how much weight Derek has lost since November, but we are SO PROUD of him! The physical is complete! We just have to wait until October to see if he got the scholarship now. With how good his GPA and MCAT score were and passing his physical he should for sure get into the airforce as a Captain.

What a relief this has been for us. Derek made weight and had room to spare. I can't even describe all that he has done for our family and continues to do. We love you so much Derek! Thank you for providing for us, loving us, tickling, and all that you do for our family!

WE LOVE YOU! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK!

Now, on to medical school on Tuesday! Good luck!

Love,
Sharice, Kael, and Eden
