October 2020

For homeschool I teach a little of everything, but I was over the big kids school. We would start the day with memory work and a devotional. Then branch into two separate classes to keep ages kind of similar. I taught science two days a week and history the other two days. Every day I would help the children with their grammar as well. It was very busy, but also a lot of fun. We would try to do a few experiments whenever we could fit them in.

The kids loved doing the science experiments.

On Fridays, Caitlin would teach the kids an art class.
Derek always enjoys showing us imaging of his work when he can get photos of procedures he does without compromising HIPPA laws. It amazes me what we are able to do to help the human body.

Some of Connor's art work from his art class.
General Conference weekend is always a favorite in our home. We love being able to spend time together as a family and hear the words of our Prophet and Apostles.
Connor got really good at puzzles. Kael's hair can be so crazy sometimes.
Just a boy loving on his dog.
Derek has become a pro at smoking meats. Such delicious food.
It was time for Kael's pandemic hair to come to an end. He asked for a haircut, so a haircut he got. However, not before we had some fun. We straightened his hair with a flat iron and gave him a beetles look. It got so long.
It's always hard to chop off his curls. I love them so much.

It certainly aged my sweet 12 year old boy. He looks so grown up.

Our little puzzle lovers finished our family puzzle again.
Mount Baldy is only a short 10 minute drive from our home. The kids and I found some time to go hike up the hill. The views are worth the 1 mile uphill climb.

These sweet kiddos love their new hiking camel backpacks. They are so good with just bundling up and going on an adventure.
When playing in the outdoors it in inevitable to get holes in your pant knees.
On top of a mountain.

This little girl is always cold, but sticks with it. Albeit sometimes with some whining thrown in.

We always pass Stark Industries on our drive up to Baldy. Ironman's home is actually in Alaska not California.

We saw our first moose in our yard. It was very exciting and the first of many moose to come to eat our plants and poop in our yard.
October 10, 2020 Byron Glacier
We went on a fun hike to Byron Glacier. It is amazing to be able to drive an hour and go on a hike to a glacier. We are so blessed to find all the amazing things to see and do in Alaska.

When your big brother has to poke his head in your picture.
This glacier was so beautiful. The hike wasn't super difficult, but it did have some big rocks to climb with potential big drops that made me nervous as a Mom hiking with 4 kids in tow. The reward was so worth it. The glacier was just beautiful. It is receding at a very quick pace, so we are glad we could see it's majesty while it lasts.

This was our 2nd glacier viewing experience in Alaska. The ice really has a blue tint to it. The waves on the ice are where sunlight hits the ice and melts in awesome patterns.

Once again Elara was upset at the hike. Something didn't go right, or she was too cold, or tired, something hurt, or thirsty. There are many ways to have a sad Elara. She is always toughs and gets through it though.

Tired after our huge accomplishment of making it to a glacier.
Goulash and knedliky bread that Derek makes from his mission. Eden is now hooked on this meal and asked for it for her 11th birthday meal.
Moose just walking down the street.

We play so hard that sometimes Connor just crashes. It's tough being in kindergarten.

The Arner's have chickens and the kids got to go play with and hold them.
Spanish class at homeschool co op class.
Hockey at homeschool for PE. Caitlin and I found some hockey sticks at a church school closing and giving away free books and school supplies and once we got some hockey sticks we decided to purchase enough to play with friends and had to get goals of course. Cold weather does not keep us from having fun in Alaska.

As Halloween approached we had much to prepare for. We were hosting out homeschool co op Halloween party at our house. So we found some costumes for both children and dogs.

Odin was a unicorn pug and Freya was a Bumblebee. Eden was Hermione Granger, Elara a Leopard cat, and Connor was the black panther. Almost ready for Halloween.
The first snow in Alaska came on October 16th. That meant we needed to hop in the hot tub as well. It was so magical and fun. Even though it was a light snow we couldn't help being excited and playing as much as we could in it. Living in Texas for 6 years without snow was too long of a drought with no snow. We LOVE snow!

Snow angels. Dogs in the snow. We played so much we made most of the snow melt.

Sledding, Snowmen, Snow angels, snow is the best!

Eden has a new found love of painting scary clown faces.
When you go to school with a snow hat on you get bed head in the morning. Connor loves his kindergarten class.
Another tooth in the bag for Elara. Literally and figuratively.
Elara had a play date with Ellora and Nikita. Having friends has been so great.
We were driving home one night and found Mama Moose just sitting in our neighbors yard.

Derek's epic pork nachos.
The poor dogs have been tortured with costumes this month.
The snow was melting so fast just because we couldn't help ourselves and had to play in it.
Another of internal picture of Derek's handy work.
Eden's secret code from Grammy she had to figure out. The kids love writing family letters.
Derek was smarty pants for work this year, and I did the same.
Our Homeschool Halloween party was at our home this year. The kids all dressed up and did a scavenger hunt. Kael was Darth Vader, Elara a cat, Eden Hermione Granger, and Connor was Black Panther.

And Mom was a smartypants like Dad.
The Roger kids got sick and couldn't make it. It was sad, but the kids still had tons of fun.
We left our pumpkins we were going to carve outside. We purchased them a week or so before Halloween, and we learned that Alaska is very different from Texas. In Texas if you purchase your pumpkins too early they get moldy. We thought we would be find in Alaska, however in Alaska if you leave your pumpkins outside they freeze solid and you can't cut into them. Then, if you try to dethaw them in your garage they get mushy and start falling apart, and leave nasty juices everywhere. Both options are gross. With no pumpkins to carve for Halloween, we took the Grandma Sapp balloons we received and had contests with pumpkin faces being drawn on our balloons. I thought they were pretty clever for a last minute on the spot fix to no pumpkins that weren't decomposing or falling apart.

We had a quiet Halloween at home. We did not hand out candy just to be extra cautious with covid out there. We were able to watch Halloween movies and still eat chili and breadsticks and tons of candy.
