Derek's February 2019

Derek had better make his own journal for while he was away because it was full of so many cool memories and I'm going to mess it up and get it all out of order.
This was the church building Derek would go to church on Sundays whenever he got a chance, which surprisingly seemed like more than during residency because someone would come and relieve him for a break for an hour or so since church was only an hour while he was gone. I'm so grateful he could attend church while deployed. I am so grateful our countries military sets up these opportunities. Being spiritually uplifted I think is so important especially while they are doing their military jobs where life isn't so great.

If I understood correctly Bagram gets missiles shot at it all the time, so at any given moment while trying to get from one place to another you may have to cover in place, so they have these bomb shelter type structures all around the base for you to duck and cover if you are out and about when an alarm goes off.

Bagram has 4 seasons and it snowed a lot this winter. It even has mountains in the background.
I guess they had times when they had to wait outside for a drill to end and sometimes you got stuck out in the cold if you didn't have a jacket. This time it was snowing and cold. One of the first snows if I remember right.
Derek got these build your own metal tie fighter kits. They are SUPER cool and took a lot of work, but that is something he could do on his down time when he was on call. I have no idea how he did it, but I love the end product and hope they make it home with him.

There was a family medicine doctor who did acupuncture so Derek went to him to try and sleep better. Apparently it hurts as much as you think it would. And I guess putting pins in your ears is for sleep?? I'm good no thanks!
Derek got to go out on a "guys" night and they went to this nicer facility for government officials and they got a really nice dinner and not just cafeteria food. I'm so glad he could have opportunities like this while he was away. There wasn't much time for play, but it's a nice little break every once in a while.

He makes me so proud. I'm so grateful for him serving our country and doing his part. It isn't an easy job, but in the end it can be rewarding knowing we served our country as a family. Sacrificing for others is so important in this life. We have been so blessed that we can give a little back. I love this man so much! He is our world, and we shared him with the military.

Daddy/Daughter Dance February 22, 2019

After months of planning and weeks of prep it all was finally coming together. We had compliments that it was the funnest dance some of the guys had "ever" been too. I'll take that compliment! I made about 150 cupcakes and frosting for everyone to decorate their own cupcake. We had sweethearts on the tables to decorate/eat. Lasagna and salad for dinner. The girls made the flowers to decorate. A fun photo booth and a balloon drop. I made the play list of music and it seemed like everyone had a really great time my girls most of all.

Andrew and Blake showed up in style and brought my girls beautiful corsages and I may have gone in the back room and just cried like a baby.
These girls love these cousins of theirs SO much. If they couldn't have their Dad this was the next best thing, and boy did they get spoiled and have a fun night. They know they are loved, and we appreciate it so much!

Decorating their own cupcake was pretty fun!
The balloon drop was one of my favorite parts of the night.

And the bubbles and the Limbo! It was all just really fun!
I'm so grateful to Amy and Nancy for all the help in making this a success. I give Nancy an idea and she would just go with it and make it fabulous! Her creativity has no ends and I am loving working with her!

February 2019

February was a fun month full of love. I'm so grateful all 4 of the kids love each other so much and support each other, are kind to each other, and love being together.

This month was very busy with Kael finishing indoor soccer, me prepping for the activity day Daddy/Daughter dance, Valentines for the kids, Kael's pinewood derby, and spring soccer beginning at the end of the month for all 3 big kids. We had some fun times, and some traumatic times. For a short month it was jammed packed.

Snuggle love!
The kids come and snuggle and pester Heidi EVERY single day. She loves them and puts up with them and we are so grateful for her presence. We love her so much!
The kids made cute hand print pictures from "we serve too" club and we hung them on our daddy deployment wall. Connor even got to participate and they read the kids a beautiful story about being far away from their Daddy, but they played catch every night with the same stars. It was really cute.
I beat injured my left thumb being cool. I kicked Kael's soccer ball with it's awesome attachment he got for Christmas and it bent my thumb backwards. It was swollen twice it's size and then bruised pretty nicely. 3 months later it still sometimes gives me grief.
Kael's indoor soccer team. Coach Sarah lives down the road and Ryan and Kael have become really great friends. It has been such a blessing having them close this last year. Sarah's husband has been TDY since July so we are the lonely wives club. They are getting ready to move to Washington DC in June and we are going to miss their family so very much. Kael learned so much and grew exponentially as a soccer player with Sarah as his coach.
Poor Freya had a skin reaction and scraped her face raw. Poor thing was looking pretty pathetic for a while.
More Sharice hand injuries. I finally was lifting heavy enough weights that my calluses tore off. It was a proud, but painful moment. My poor hands hurt a lot in February.
Traumatic injury number whatever it is.
Here's the story.
Elara had begged for a chance to stay home with Mom and have a special day. So that morning I took her to the playground and then the post office. She literally made two videos in the morning for Derek telling him how great it was to stay home with Mom. Well, a week or so earlier at the dentist they told us to start really wiggling Elara's tooth and try to get it to come out because she had a shark tooth growing in behind it. SO, she begged me to tie some dental floss to her tooth and slam the door. We tried unsuccessfully about 4 times the night before. The dental floss just kept slipping. So, at home she begged me to try again, and so I did. It slipped once and then I figured out finally how to really tie everything tight and I did. And I SLAMMED the door....
The tooth did come out, BUT so did the ginormous root that was still there ATTACHED to her jaw bone. It tore through her gums and made a gaping hole in her gums.
She was so excited and then she was screaming and blood was everywhere! We were both a little traumatized. I got her in to a dentist the next day to make sure everything would be ok. The took an xray and told me that on part of the root a piece of her jaw bone was connected to it.
It was not my favorite moment. Elara felt better by the next day and was already trying to wiggle more teeth, but I was DONE wiggling teeth. She wrote a letter for the tooth fairy and attached her tooth. The tooth fairy wrote her back and left her extra money for the "extra root".

The next day on February 13th I got a cute box in the mail and beautiful FLOWERS from my amazing husband!
How he manages to ship me flowers from half away across the world impresses me as much as the beautiful flowers. Derek always makes me feel loved and spoiled even though his birthday is Valentines Day. I'm so grateful for all of his thoughtfulness and time he puts into putting a smile on my face. I feel so loved and blessed!
The girls had a play date with their friend Kensie Fillmore and they got some beautiful pictures taken.

We worked hard the day before Valentines Day on their school Valentines boxes.
I stayed up way too late trying to help them finish their creations. Kael made the blue bat, Eden did Pugs and the greatest showman, and Elara made a flower garden. I love how creative and unique each kiddo is. So proud of them for being creative and having fun together.

I made the kids their own Valentines to wake up to. It's fun trying to surprise them each year with something new and creative on big hearts. It's kind of a yearly tradition now I guess.
Heidi woke up early and left us a fun Valentines surprise of chocolate covered strawberries that were SO yummy!
Dad also made special Valentines and got them delivered before Valentines and we saved them.
They were AMAZING!!! Pop up valentines cards with special notes to each kid.
Connor got a train, Elara a unicorn rainbow, Kael a dragon, and Eden a lady bug on a flower.
I got a hedgehog that was adorable.
These are treasured cards we are keeping FOREVER.
The kids loved reading a card from their Dad and took them to school to show them off.

The next day I took a video of Elara pumping on a swing. She has finally mastered swinging! It was a really great moment. I love seeing my kids accomplish new things and I just love watching them grow. They amaze me every single day.

Sometimes the girls like to wear lip stick to church and they just wanted to show off to Derek all ready for church.
Silly Elara playing at the Pinkston's.
We went up and Blake and Andrew helped Kael finish his pinewood derby car and got it all ready to go.

Kael worked SO hard on this car. He wanted it fast, AND cool looking. He named it the "Arrow of Light" since he is working on his arrow of light for scouts. It definitely looks amazing.
Silly little Connor is always trying to sleep in my room.
We wait in the car for an hour while Kael and Eden each have a 30 minute piano lesson. I love watching the kids go out and play in the front yard while they wait. It has helped us get some good soccer practice in. Eden was trying out Kael's new soccer ball holder to practice kicking harder.

On Friday February 22nd it was finally the Daddy/Daughter Dance. We spent all morning decorating. Kael was really sick and had been coughing since before Christmas and I finally got him a doctors appointment so we had that to do in the morning as well. It was a long day with a lot of prep, but it was well worth it, and it was such a success!

I will make a post with all of those pictures separate because there are a lot.

I'll also post a separate post of all of Derek's fun pictures he sent home to us for February.

The pinewood derby was the very next day, so we were staying plenty busy. All the cars turned out so fun! All of Kael's hard work paid off because he took 3rd for the Webelos that had about 5 racers, but those Webelos were fast. AND he took 4th overall with all cub scouts combined!
They also handed out awards from December to February. Kael had earned his Webelos merit badge among about 6 other awards. He worked hard this winter and it paid off. I am SO proud of him.

It really was a fun event and I'm so glad he was able to do so well and have a fast car. Blake really was our go to guy for this project and I couldn't have done all the work he did to help Kael and I'm just so grateful to Derek's family for stepping up and helping us so much while Derek has been gone.

The next week for scouts they went to a rock climbing wall. I didn't realize that was the activity until we got there. Kael is terrified of heights and really struggles, so I didn't know if he would participate or not. When I got back they said he tried once and got almost half way before he looked down and then froze and had to come down. They got two tries, so he waited until everyone else had gone, and then he tried one more time. He didn't look down, and he went really fast, and he made it to the TOP! I was SO proud of Kael for overcoming his fear and making it.

Our last traumatic event for the month was another dental appointment. In January it turned out Connor had some cavities that needed to be filled. He was so sick when he was suppose to get them done at the beginning of the month we had to reschedule for the end because he would be getting laughing gas and needed a good airway.
He was a champ! I didn't know how he would do, but he sat so still, and obeyed so well! We have had such difficult dental problems in the past I was very nervous, but Connor just did so well, and it actually wasn't that bad of an experience.

He was ready to rock this and gave me the thumbs up sign.

He did awesome. And I was done with teeth after this month. If only I knew what April would bring.
